Porirua is a city of contrasts — close to Wellington but with large semi-rural communities, a significant Pacific and Māori population, and areas where public transport provides reasonable coverage alongside neighbourhoods where it provides none. Titahi Bay, Whitby, Paremata, Plimmerton, and the coastal communities are all either poorly served by transit or dependent on connections that do not match shift work hours. For many Porirua workers, a vehicle is how they get to work, full stop.
A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.
Porirua District Court — what you need to know
Porirua District Court is located at 4 Hagley Street, Porirua 5022.
For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.
Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. Other Wellington region courts include:
- Wellington District Court: 49 Ballance Street, Wellington Central 6011 (see dedicated page)
- Hutt Valley District Court: 10–18 Knights Road, Lower Hutt 5010 (see dedicated page)
- Masterton District Court: 41 Dixon Street, Masterton 5810 (see dedicated page)
For demerit point suspensions, you file at the court nearest to where you live.
Once filed, hearings at Porirua District Court are typically listed within 1–2 weeks.
What is a limited licence?
A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA. The conditions are set by the judge and are binding. Driving outside them is a criminal offence.
For a full explanation, see our complete guide to limited licences in New Zealand.
Who can apply in Porirua?
The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. Many Porirua residents can demonstrate this directly, particularly those in outlying communities or on shift patterns that transit cannot serve.
Porirua applications commonly come from:
- Workers in Whitby, Paremata, and Plimmerton — coastal communities where public transport operates on limited routes and schedules, and where driving to Wellington or Porirua employment centres is the realistic option
- Shift workers in retail, hospitality, and healthcare finishing late or starting early when the Metlink buses and trains stop running
- Tradespeople and contractors working across Porirua, Titahi Bay, and the northern Wellington suburbs
- Workers at the Porirua industrial and commercial areas on shift patterns outside transit coverage
- Parents and caregivers in semi-rural parts of Porirua and Whitby responsible for children and family obligations
Porirua has a large Pacific and Māori community, many in essential industries and community roles. The consequences of a disqualification for families in this city are real.
Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.
Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.
