Masterton is the main town of the Wairarapa — a large agricultural region across the Remutaka Range from Wellington. The Wairarapa is sheep and beef country, with viticulture, olives, and boutique food production adding to a predominantly rural economy. The Wairarapa commuter train connects Masterton to Wellington, but it serves only the commuter corridor and not the surrounding farms, rural townships, or employers in the Wairarapa itself. For workers outside the commuter window or beyond the rail line, a vehicle is the only way to work. A disqualification in Masterton removes that entirely.
A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.
Masterton District Court — what you need to know
Masterton District Court is located at 41 Dixon Street, Masterton 5810.
For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.
Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. Other Wellington region courts include:
- Wellington District Court: 49 Ballance Street, Wellington Central 6011 (see dedicated page)
- Porirua District Court: 4 Hagley Street, Porirua 5022 (see dedicated page)
For demerit point suspensions, you file at the court nearest to where you live.
Once filed, hearings at Masterton District Court are typically listed within 1–2 weeks.
What is a limited licence?
A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA. The conditions are set by the judge and are binding. Driving outside them is a criminal offence.

Who can apply in Masterton?
The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. In the Wairarapa, the rural economy and limited transport alternatives make hardship real for most working applicants.
Masterton applications commonly come from:
- Sheep and beef farming workers on the Wairarapa and Tararua hill country farms — driving is how farm work is done
- Viticulture and horticultural workers in the Martinborough and Wairarapa wine country
- Agricultural contractors covering the Wairarapa plains
- Tradespeople working across Masterton and into the outlying Wairarapa towns — Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough
- Workers commuting to Wellington for employment that does not align with the train timetable or is not located near a Wellington station
- Parents and caregivers in rural Wairarapa communities responsible for school runs and family obligations
Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.
Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.
