Limited Licence Lawyer Dunedin

Limited licence application preparation for clients in Dunedin and the wider Otago region.

Dunedin is Otago's main city — a university city, healthcare hub, and the gateway to Central Otago and the southern lakes. Public transport within central Dunedin is reasonable, but it does not serve the outlying suburbs, the Taieri Plains, the Otago Peninsula, or the rural and semi-rural communities that surround the city. For shift workers, tradespeople, and those employed in the food processing, healthcare, and construction industries, a disqualification removes income-earning capacity that the bus cannot replace.

A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.

Dunedin District Court — what you need to know

Dunedin District Court is located at 1 Stuart Street, Dunedin 9016.

For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.

Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. Other Otago courts include:

For demerit point suspensions, you file at the court nearest to where you live.

Once filed, hearings at Dunedin District Court are typically listed within 1–2 weeks.

What is a limited licence?

A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA. The conditions are set by the judge and are binding. Driving outside them is a criminal offence.

Who can apply in Dunedin?

The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. Many Dunedin applicants can demonstrate this clearly, particularly those working outside the city centre or on shifts that public transport cannot serve.

Dunedin applications commonly come from:

  • Healthcare workers at Dunedin Hospital and the wider hospital network on night shifts and early-morning starts when buses have stopped
  • Tradespeople and contractors working across Dunedin, Mosgiel, and the surrounding Taieri District
  • Workers in food processing and manufacturing at the dairy, meat, and seafood processing facilities in Dunedin and Mosgiel on shift patterns outside transit hours
  • Workers in Mosgiel, Green Island, and the Taieri Plains commuting to Dunedin for employment where the bus does not run at their hours
  • University and polytechnic staff and support workers on shift patterns that do not align with Dunedin's limited evening bus service
  • Parents and caregivers in the Otago Peninsula, Green Island, and outer Dunedin suburbs responsible for family obligations

Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.

Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.

Public transport in Dunedin

Dunedin has a limited Orbus bus service covering the city and main suburbs. The hilly terrain means some areas are not well served. Evening and weekend services are reduced. Workers in the Mosgiel, Port Chalmers, and Taieri areas have limited bus options.

Employment and industry

Education (University of Otago, Otago Polytechnic), healthcare (Dunedin Hospital), manufacturing, logistics, and agricultural services are the main employers. The construction sector is growing, particularly with the new Dunedin Hospital project.

Frequently asked questions — Dunedin

At Dunedin District Court — the court that imposed the disqualification. Your residential address is not relevant for conviction-based disqualifications. The exception is demerit point suspensions, where you file at the court nearest to where you live — which for Mosgiel and Taieri is Dunedin.

Yes. Healthcare shift workers on night shifts finishing when buses have stopped are a well-recognised category of hardship. The key is demonstrating the specific hours and the absence of any practical transport alternative. We draft the affidavit to set that out clearly.

Documents are typically ready within 2–3 business days. Hearings are usually listed within 1–2 weeks of filing. Total time is generally 3–5 weeks from instruction to hearing.
