Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure tourism capital — and one of its most expensive places to live. The town's economy runs entirely on tourism, hospitality, and the construction industry servicing the region's relentless growth. Public transport within Queenstown is reasonable by small city standards but does not serve the outlying areas, Arrowtown, Frankton, Queenstown Hill, or the shift patterns of a hospitality and construction workforce that starts before 6am and finishes after midnight. For many Queenstown workers who cannot afford the city's housing costs and commute in from Cromwell, Kingston, or Wānaka, a vehicle is not optional. A disqualification here is a direct employment crisis.
A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.
Queenstown District Court — what you need to know
Queenstown District Court is located at 36 Stanley Street, Queenstown 9300.
For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.
Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. Other Otago courts include:
- Dunedin District Court: 1 Stuart Street, Dunedin 9016 (see dedicated page)
- Alexandra District Court: 4/6 Kelman Street, Alexandra 9360 (see dedicated page)
Check your sentencing documents to confirm which court imposed the disqualification. For demerit point suspensions, you file at the court nearest to where you live.
Once filed, hearings at Queenstown District Court are typically listed within 1–2 weeks.
What is a limited licence?
A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA. The conditions are set by the judge and are binding. Driving outside them is a criminal offence.

Who can apply in Queenstown?
The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. Queenstown's tourism economy and worker housing reality mean many applicants have a strong factual case.
Queenstown applications commonly come from:
- Hospitality and tourism workers on early and late shifts at hotels, restaurants, ski fields, and activity operators — shift start times are often before the first bus and finish times after the last
- Construction workers on the substantial development projects across Queenstown, Frankton, and surrounding areas
- Workers commuting from Cromwell, Alexandra, and Wānaka to Queenstown employment, where the distance and absent public transport make driving the only option
- Tradespeople and contractors working across the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago district
- Ski field workers at Remarkables, Coronet Peak, and Cardrona whose transport to the slopes is not served by any regular public transit
- Workers in Arrowtown, Glenorchy, and outlying communities who cannot reach Queenstown employment any other way
Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.
Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.
