Limited Licence Lawyer Nelson

Limited licence application preparation for clients in Nelson and the wider Nelson-Marlborough region.

Nelson is one of New Zealand's sunniest cities — and one of its most economically diverse regional centres. The Nelson-Tasman region has major horticultural, fishing, forestry, and marine industries, alongside a growing tourism economy. Public transport within Nelson city is limited; beyond the urban area, it effectively does not exist. For workers in the orchards and packhouses of the Motueka Valley, the fishing industry at Nelson Port, the forestry operations in Golden Bay, and the trades servicing the region's growth, a vehicle is essential to employment. A disqualification removes that instantly.

A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.

Nelson District Court — what you need to know

Nelson District Court is located at 200 Bridge Street, Nelson 7010.

For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.

Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. The other main court in the region is:

Check your sentencing documents to confirm which court imposed the disqualification. For demerit point suspensions, you file at the court nearest to where you live.

Once filed, hearings at Nelson District Court are typically listed within 1–2 weeks.

What is a limited licence?

A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA. The conditions are set by the judge and are binding. Driving outside them is a criminal offence.

Who can apply in Nelson?

The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. In the Nelson-Tasman region, the transport alternatives are limited and hardship is real for most working applicants.

Nelson applications commonly come from:

  • Horticulture workers in the apple, kiwifruit, hop, and berry operations of the Motueka Valley and Tasman coast — the region produces a significant share of New Zealand's export produce, and orchard work has no public transport access
  • Fishing industry workers at Nelson Port — one of New Zealand's busiest fishing ports — working to tide and catch schedules rather than bus timetables
  • Forestry workers in the Golden Bay, Murchison, and upper Buller plantation forests
  • Tradespeople working across Nelson, Tasman, Golden Bay, and Marlborough
  • Tourism and hospitality workers in Abel Tasman, Golden Bay, and the surrounding national park areas
  • Workers commuting between Nelson, Richmond, and Motueka where public transport does not provide a realistic alternative

Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.

Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.

Public transport in Nelson

Nelson has a limited NBus service covering the city and Stoke. Frequency is low and coverage is minimal outside the city centre. Richmond, Motueka, and Golden Bay have no regular public transport connections. The Tasman District is entirely reliant on private vehicles.

Employment and industry

Horticulture (apples, grapes, hops), fishing, forestry, tourism, and trades are the dominant industries. The Nelson-Tasman region is a major producer of seafood, wine, and fruit. Workers in these industries need vehicle access to reach orchards, vineyards, fishing facilities, and rural properties.
