Blenheim is the main town of the Marlborough region — New Zealand's largest wine-producing area and home to some of the most productive horticultural land in the South Island. The Wairau Plains and Awatere Valley are blanketed in sauvignon blanc vineyards that supply global markets. The viticulture workforce — including seasonal harvest workers, vineyard managers, and cellar hands — is huge and entirely vehicle-dependent. Public transport in Blenheim is minimal and does not reach the vineyards at all. For Marlborough workers, losing a licence means losing your job.
A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.
Blenheim District Court — what you need to know
Blenheim District Court is located at 58 Alfred Street, Blenheim 7201.
For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.
Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. The other main courts in the region include:
- Nelson District Court: 200 Bridge Street, Nelson 7010 (see dedicated page)
- Kaikoura District Court Hearing Centre: 34 Esplanade, Kaikoura (see dedicated page)
For demerit point suspensions, you file at the court nearest to where you live.
Once filed, hearings at Blenheim District Court are typically listed within 1–2 weeks.
What is a limited licence?
A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA. The conditions are set by the judge and are binding. Driving outside them is a criminal offence.
For a full explanation, see our complete guide to limited licences in New Zealand.
Who can apply in Blenheim?
The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. In Marlborough, the absence of public transport and the industry structure make hardship factual for the majority of working applicants.
Blenheim applications commonly come from:
- Viticulture workers across the Wairau Plains and Awatere Valley — vineyard work requires driving to properties spread across a wide rural area with no transit access
- Winery and cellar workers operating on shift patterns set by harvest and fermentation schedules, not bus timetables
- Horticultural and seasonal workers in the apple, pear, and cherry orchards of the Wairau Valley
- Tradespeople working across Marlborough and into Nelson, Kaikōura, and the Awatere
- Marine industry and aquaculture workers at the Marlborough Sounds aquaculture operations, where boat and land transport are essential
- Parents and caregivers in rural Marlborough communities with no transport alternatives
Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.
Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.
