Limited Licence Lawyer Kerikeri

Limited licence application preparation for clients in Kerikeri and the wider Northland region.

Kerikeri is the Bay of Islands' largest town — a centre for horticulture, tourism, and hospitality. The surrounding area is semi-rural, with orchards, vineyards, and lifestyle properties spread across the mid-Northland hills. Bus services are limited within Kerikeri itself and essentially non-existent for rural and coastal workers commuting in from the surrounding Bay of Islands communities. A driving disqualification in this area means losing your job before the dust settles.

A limited licence may allow you to keep driving for essential purposes while your disqualification runs.

Where do Kerikeri residents apply?

Kerikeri does not have its own District Court. If you were convicted and disqualified in Kerikeri or the surrounding Bay of Islands area, your limited licence application is filed at:

Kaikohe District Court 21–25 Station Road, Kaikohe 0405

For a full explanation of the Kaikohe District Court process, court address, and the broader Northland satellite court network, see our dedicated Kaikohe page.

For demerit point suspensions, you apply at the court nearest to where you currently live — which for Kerikeri residents is Kaikohe District Court.

Who can apply from Kerikeri?

The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. Kerikeri's economy and geography make hardship straightforward to demonstrate for most workers.

Applications from Kerikeri commonly come from:

  • Horticulture and orchard workers — the Bay of Islands has a large and growing kiwifruit and citrus industry, and workers often need to travel between properties on rural roads with no transit access
  • Tourism and hospitality workers on shift patterns that fall outside any bus schedule, particularly during the busy summer season
  • Tradespeople and contractors working across the Bay of Islands, Pahia, Russell, Kaitaia, and surrounding areas
  • Rural and lifestyle property residents in areas around Kerikeri, Waipapa, Haruru, and the wider Bay of Islands where a vehicle is the only way to reach employment, schools, or services
  • Healthcare and community services workers covering a spread-out population across the Bay of Islands

Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification is for a serious alcohol offence or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.

Demerit point suspensions follow a different process — no 28-day stand-down applies.

Public transport in Kerikeri

Kerikeri has very limited public transport. A bus service connects Kerikeri to Paihia and the Bay of Islands area, but frequency is low. There is no bus connection to Whangarei (85 km) suitable for commuting. The wider Mid-North area — Waimate North, Puketona, Ohaeawai — has no public transport.

Employment and industry

Kerikeri's economy revolves around horticulture (kiwifruit, citrus, avocado), tourism (Bay of Islands), construction, and viticulture. Seasonal horticultural work is a major employer. The growing retirement community has driven healthcare and service industry jobs. Many workers drive to orchards, packhouses, and tourist destinations across the Bay of Islands.
