Limited Licence Lawyer Kaikohe

Limited licence application preparation for clients in Kaikohe and the wider Northland region.

Northland is one of New Zealand's most car-dependent regions. Farming, forestry, fishing, and tourism employ much of the local workforce, and the distances between towns mean that a vehicle is not optional — it is how people get to work, reach services, and fulfil family obligations. For drivers in the Far North who have been disqualified, a limited licence may be the difference between keeping employment and losing it.

Kaikohe District Court — what you need to know

Kaikohe District Court is located at 21–25 Station Road, Kaikohe 0405. It serves the Far North district, including Kerikeri, Paihia, the Bay of Islands, and surrounding rural areas.

For conviction-based disqualifications, there is a 28-day stand-down period before you can apply. Demerit point suspensions do not have a stand-down — you can apply immediately.

Where to file: You apply at the court that imposed your disqualification. Other Northland courts include Kaitaia District Court (15 Redan Road), Dargaville District Court (45 Hokianga Road), and Whangarei District Court (103–109 Bank Street). If you were disqualified at one of those courts, you file there — not at Kaikohe.

What is a limited licence?

A limited licence is a court order that allows you to drive under specific conditions while your disqualification is running. It does not remove the disqualification — it creates a legal exception permitting you to drive within defined hours, routes, or for defined purposes. If granted, you receive a pink driver's licence card from NZTA.

For a full explanation, see our complete guide to limited licences in New Zealand.

Who can apply in the Far North?

The test is extreme hardship to yourself or undue hardship to another person. In Northland, transport alternatives are frequently non-existent, which means hardship arguments are often straightforward to establish.

Applications from the Far North commonly involve:

  • Farmers and rural workers for whom driving is integral to daily work — moving livestock, checking fences, reaching remote properties
  • Forestry workers in the Northland plantation sector who travel to remote sites
  • Fishing industry workers who need to reach wharves, processing facilities, and vessels
  • Workers commuting between towns — Kaikohe to Kerikeri, Paihia to Kawakawa — where there is no regular bus service
  • Parents and caregivers responsible for children and elderly family members

Section 65 restriction: If your disqualification involves a high blood alcohol level or is a third or subsequent alcohol conviction, a limited licence may not be available. See our section 65 guide.

Public transport in Kaikohe

Kaikohe and the Mid North have no public transport to speak of. The nearest bus service of any kind is in Kerikeri or Whangarei. Residents depend entirely on private vehicles for all travel — work, medical, education, and daily errands. This makes losing a licence particularly severe in this area.

Employment and industry

Agriculture, forestry, and related services dominate employment. Dairy farming, beef cattle, and forestry harvesting require daily vehicle access. Government services and education are also significant employers. Many residents commute to Kerikeri, Paihia, or Whangarei for work.
